If there is any car that is included on almost every list of “greatest enthusiasts car” it’s the Toyota Supra. The small coupe sports car was originally bolted together as a response to the Z cars coming from competitor Datsun. Now after years of rumor, speculation and dreaming, it looks like the new Toyota Supra is all but official. Toyota’s newest concept car, the FT-1 likely previews the new shape and design of the upcoming Supra replacement.

For Alex Shen, studio chief designer at Toyota’s Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, California, the words describing the sports car’s styling concept came first — words like «sexy,» «honest,» «organic,» «kick-ass.» Followed by proportions — front/mid-engine, rear drive, just the right scale. And a wild guess at price — maybe $60,000? «It’s a Toyota,» says Shen. «It ought to be affordable.» Only then did lines start to appear.
Toyota also confirmed that it intends to launch a new sports car on a platform developed with BMW for any production version of the FT-1. Also, the German manufacturer will use the platform for their own sports car, believed to be a replacement for the Z4.
In the recent past Toyota has also renewed its trademark for the Supra name
