You have to wonder with all the concepts and cool car ideas in the past if Toyota is actually going to release something as cool looking as the new 2015 Toyota Supra FT-1. If you take a look at Toyota’s history over the past 10 years they’ve done nothing but build people-pleasing consumer / family vehicles. So you’d have to imagine it’s about time they release something «cool». With that being said I really think it’s only a matter of time before we see these relatively cheap sports cars all over the road. Toyota will be mass producing a Sports car after over 10 years of «hiding» for under $60,000! Who wouldn’t want to have one of these toys in their garage, and if they’re anything like the last Supra they’ll carry on the legacy of being Toyotas Sports car.
The Toyota FT-1 concept is a pure performance, track-focused sports car model created by CALTY Design Research, Toyota’s North American Design branch. The FT-1 concept is a symbol that captures elements of the emotion and energy we can expect to see in future Toyota vehicles designs. Its design is heavily influenced by Toyota’s long sports car tradition that includes vehicles such as 2000GT, Celica, Supra and most recently, FT-86 (Scion F-RS). If the rumors that the 2015 Toyota Supra will be based off the all new FT-1 then we may have just got our first glimpse of what it might look like at the Detroit Auto Show. The concept’s sleek and futuristic design caused quite the buzz, and they still have more to unveil.
The two versions that have been showcased so far are the standard Red exterior, with black and red interior, and the newer Graphite model, which features a graphite paintjob as well as a leather interior with lots of exposed metal. It’s too early to determine Toyota’s plans in terms of getting the FT-1 or a new Supra on the road, but the FT-1 has been confirmed for the next Gran Turismo video game.
The model we have yet to see is the FT-1 Vision, which will sport competition alloys, better aerodynamics, and wider wings. It’s possible the Supra will be much closer to this design.
The last time was saw the Supra was way back in 2002 when the last Mark IV came off the Japanese assembly line. Of course a new model will far exceed this in every way.
Initially it was believed that the Supra would be based on the 3.5 litre V-6, 400hp FT-HS, which was showcased in 2007. The first patent was filed in 2010. Now that the FT-1 is doing the rounds, it seems more likely that it will be based of that.
Earlier this year Toyota once again filed for the Supra trademark, meaning they’re just looking for the right opportunity to reintroduce the brand. First and foremost the concept will have to be approved for production. Toyota say in its current incarnation the FT-1 model could cost $60,000.
